Baby Gear

——————————————————————————————————————————————

Holy Moly; there is a lot of stuff out there for babies these days! I was completely overwhelmed when trying to register for baby items. Thanks to the Baby Bargains book, LuciesList.com and exploring my friend’s registries, I managed to complete my own.  Here are my recommendations to make your registry creation a little easier:

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Car seats and strollers

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Carriers

  • Ergo
    • Most comfy
  • Baby Bjorn
    • For when baby wants to face out
    • The “Active” version gives a little more back support

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Feeding

  • Dr. Brown’s Bottles
    • Get a few different brands of bottles because you never know what baby is going to like, but more often than not, mom’s I know use Dr. Brown’s
  • Dishwasher Baskets
    • For all your Dr. Brown’s bottle parts
  • Bottle Drying Rack
    • Because you will never put your bottles fully away unless you have company
  • Formula
    • I am happy with Enfamil, but just like bottles and diapers, you may have to try a couple brands until you find one that works best with your baby.  Once you have found your favorite, buy the store brand version.  It is MUCH cheaper and the EXACT same; all formula has to be closely regulated by the FDA.
  • Boppy
    • I didn’t even really use my Boppy for breastfeeding support, my baby just loves to lay in it and be fed her bottle while in it.
  • Burb Cloths
    • These cloth diapers have been around forever
  • High Chair
    • Save room with this highchair

Nursery

  • Bassinet vs. Pack n Play
    • We borrowed a bassinet because we did not have enough room for a Pack n Play.  Baby was in her own crib at 3 weeks anyway, so I am glad we did not make the investment.  If we lived in a bigger home, we probably would have bought the Pack n Play.
  • Furniture
    • We got our crib and dresser from Babies R Us and have been really happy with it.  Make sure to bring your coupons and save 20%!
    • This organizational unit from Target helps immensely:
      • You can purchase different color drawers and finishes to match your baby’s nursery
  • Black Out Drapes
    • Very helpful for naptime
  • Sound Machine
    • Put it on the “waterfall” setting, turn the volume all the way up and you can barely hear yourself think. Perfect for baby! Sleeps right through the noisy neighbors above us!
  • Mattress
    • There are lots of options out there these days.  We went with the affordable option and have had no issues.
  • Breathable Bumper
    • Baby was getting arms and legs stuck outside the crib without it
  • Video Monitor
    • This lets you know what baby is up to without having to disturb them by opening the door.
      • TIP: Get the protection plan just in case your monitor stops working
  • Safety Monitor
    • Our baby is a tummy sleeper…shhhh don’t tell our pediatrician! This alarm keeps us from worrying about the SIDS risk
  • Glider
    • Little Castles Serenity Glider and Ottoman Set from Buy Buy Baby.
    • I searched high and low for a comfy, cushiony glider that didn’t cost over $1000 and I found it at Buy Buy Baby.  It was $599 for both glider and ottoman, but even cheaper with the 20% off coupon.  We spend hours in the chair with baby, so it was a great investment.  In retrospect I might not have even bought the ottoman because the nursing stool gives me so much more support.
  • Nursing Stool
  • Changing Pad
    • This one is nice because it has two tabs that screw into the back of your dresser

Baby Fun

Blankets, Swaddles and Soothers

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Diapers, Wipes, Medicine, Lotions and Potions

  • Diapers and Wipes
    • Buy a bunch of small packs of different brands to find what baby likes best.  I use Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers and Pampers Sensitive Wipes, but hope to move to a store brand soon to save some money.
      • TIP: If your baby is leaking out of their diaper, go to the next size up
  • Multi Use Pads
    • These have saved me from having to wash my changing pad cover at least once a day
  • Diaper Genie
  • Diaper Cream, Lotion and Soap
  • Try to find travel sizes of many different brands so you can choose what you like and what works with your baby’s skin. There are many great options from Johnson&Johnson to Organic Burt’s Bees.   Aveeno Lotion worked great for my baby.  I would definitely have A&D ointment on hand to prevent diaper rash and other skin ailments, as well to help with taking the baby’s rectal temperature.
  • Nail Clippers
    • I used the baby nail files found at Babies R Us for my newborn.  Once she got older the nail clippers worked perfectly.
  • Thermometer
  • Nasal Aspirator-use the one the hospital gives you
    • TIP: Take everything you can from the hospital. They should give you packs of diapers, formula samples, combs, nasal aspirator, hats and more.
  • Hyland’s teething tablets
  • Medicine
    • This kit has everything you need—fever reducer, gas medicine, gripe water, oragel and more
  • Disposable diaper bags
    • Handy for the diaper bag and even for the nursery with the really stinky diapers

Clothing and Laundry

  • Carter’s—The clothes are cute, fit well and are always on sale. You can find them anywhere.
    • You will be given so many clothes—try not to buy any in the beginning.  Your munchkin will grow out of clothes every month.
    • Gowns are really handy with newborns for the constant diaper changes
    • Try to buy zip up sleepers. Again, so handy for the first few months.
  • Laundry bag
    • This was helpful to attach to the side of our dresser when we didn’t have any room for a laundry basket. It is also helpful to wash baby socks and accessories in the bag so you won’t lose them.
  • Dreft
    • Buy the store brand of Dreft. It is just as gentle but much more affordable.
  • Onesie Monthly Stickers
    • For cute pictures on their monthly birthday
